Also mentioned is Brescia midfielder Tonali. The report states that he is being considered to add extra depth to the squad.
Keita-like transfer
Tonali is a very promising player. Even at the age of 19, he already has three caps for Italy, and he has started all but four of his side’s league games since the start of last season. Massimo Cellino (you may remember him from his Leeds days) is the club’s president, and he said that he believes the youngster – who has been touted as the ‘new Andrea Pirlo’ – is worth “€300m (£256m)”.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
Clearly he has a big future ahead of him, but Liverpool should not look to bring him in too soon. The Reds are currently flying in the Premier League – they top the table by 13 points and have a game in hand – and they are also the European champions. Given the way they are playing, it would be silly for Jurgen Klopp to bring in too many new faces – especially in January – that could upset the boat.
In the long-term, though, his addition could be one of great use to the 52-year-old. It seems they are plenty of other clubs circling around the teenager – Cellino also said that “all the big Italian clubs are interested”, as well as the likes of Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and PSG abroad.
Whilst he may not fit into the side yet, Klopp and Co would be well served trying to sign him on a deal similar to the one they struck for Naby Keita. The Reds announced his signing in 2017, but the Guinea international did not make the switch to Anfield until 2018, with him staying with former club RB Leipzig for an extra year.
Whether it be loaning him back to Italy for six months, or even for another whole year on top of that, it would be ideal for Liverpool to sign and leave him in his homeland for a while longer to develop. Making a switch to a foreign country before 20 can sometimes be difficult – look at Moise Kean, who is yet to score for Everton since joining from Juventus in the summer. This, therefore, would be the best way for them to proceed.
In other news, Liverpool should sell this Champions League winner in the summer.
