We all knew Ian Holloway was a bit of a character before his Blackpool side were promoted to the Premier League but I’m not sure we knew to the extent that we do now. In his short stay with England’s elite, it’s fair to say that ‘Ollie’ as he is affectionately known in the game has ruffled a few feathers.
It was during Wayne Rooney turbulent contract negotiations that ‘Ollie’ made his first notable outburst. “He’s one of the best centre-forwards in the world. And if he sees his contract out he’s going to be able to walk out of there for nothing. That’s the people at the very top of the game’s fault. What if he sits there for 18 months, throws tantrums, doesn’t try, doesn’t play, and someone’s already said to him, ‘We’ll take you and we’ll pay you some of that money we should have paid Manchester United because you can walk out on a free?’
An impassioned Holloway spoke honestly and frankly about the issue and actually sparked empathy from others in the game. It is at time like these when a bit of honesty goes a long way, especially for us on looking fans! So, At that moment in time Holloway grew on us and in turn proved that he was the much needed breath of fresh air in the Premier League.
However, his latest outburst hasn’t really galvanized our thoughts and feelings towards him. The affable Bristolian, Holloway, made ten changes to his side for their encounter against Aston Villa last week. It was after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Villa that in my eyes things started to sour, ‘Ollie’ threatened to resign if his club were fined for fielding a weakened side.
I’m left thinking that for a man who has been in the Premier League for five minutes, does he really have the right to start calling the shots as he did after his side’s defeat? So what do you think? He is a character, and comes across as a splendid bloke but im not sure I have the patience to listen to him for the remaining two thirds of the season.
